ISBN & Copyright Assistant
Demystify ISBNs, copyright, and book registration for self-publishing romance authors
What is an ISBN?
ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number. Think of it as a unique barcode for your book, like a product SKU. Each format of your book needs its own ISBN.
13-digit unique identifier
Uniquely identifies your specific book edition
Required for print books
Needed for bookstores and libraries
Each format needs its own
Kindle ebook, EPUB, paperback, hardcover, audiobook
Free or paid options
Amazon/IngramSpark offer free, or buy from Bowker
EXAMPLE:
"Velvet Hearts" by Jane Author
├─ Kindle ebook: ISBN 978-1-234567-89-0
├─ EPUB ebook: ISBN 978-1-234567-90-6
├─ Paperback: ISBN 978-1-234567-91-3
└─ Hardcover: ISBN 978-1-234567-92-0
Same book, different formats = different ISBNs
Free ISBN vs. Buying Your Own
| Feature | Free ISBN (Amazon/IngramSpark) | Buy Your Own (Bowker) |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | $0 | $125 (single) or $295 (10-pack) |
| Publisher Name | "Amazon KDP" or "IngramSpark" | Your chosen name |
| Ownership | Platform owns it | You own it |
| Flexibility | Tied to that platform | Use anywhere |
| Best for | KDP-only authors, single book | Wide distribution, multiple books |
| Can switch platforms? | No - must get new ISBN | Yes - take your ISBN anywhere |
IMPORTANT: Free ISBNs are tied to the platform forever
If you use Amazon's free ISBN, it will always list "Amazon KDP" as the publisher. If you later want to use IngramSpark or other distributors, you'll need a NEW ISBN and your book's sales history won't carry over. For wide distribution, buy your own.
